Savonarola Dining Set, Italy 1960s

The Savonarola originates from a chair found in the convent of San Marco in Florence which was used by the 15th century Italian Dominican priest Girolamo Savonarola. Savonarola-style pieces feature a lower structure built from intersecting or flowing supports. In Italian design, the model was often constructed from wrought iron, where curved elements replace rigid straight lines and create a sense of movement within the structure.

This dining set applies that approach through a wrought iron construction. The slender metal elements connect beneath the surface of the glass tabletop, creating a continuous structure that feels both stable and dynamic. These elements distribute weight across the base to offer stability while also supporting the glass top above. The design is an interesting unification of Brutalism and mid-century modernism where the two styles create tension. The allure of this model mainly rests in its sculptural silhouette, most striking in the structure of its base. The legs of the chairs are curved, forming graceful lines that evoke a sense of movement and lightness despite the robustness of the material. The table feels balanced, from the mix of juxtaposing materials and shapes. The iron base is strong and bold, yet its curved lines prevent it from appearing rigid. The glass top, in turn, helps avoid visual clutter and makes the table easier to place in a room without overwhelming the space.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The table has minor marks and scratches. Minor imperfections may be present on the glass due to age and manufacturing inconsistencies. The chairs have recently been reconditioned. The frames of the chairs have minor marks, scratches, and discolouration. The chairs have recently been reupholstered in a premium fabric.
