Description
A vibrant and refined example of mid-twentieth century Japanese cloisonné enamel, produced by the Sato Cloisonné Company, a respected workshop known for its high-quality execution and distinctly modern decorative sensibility in the postwar period.
The vase is of rounded globular form, set against a luminous turquoise enamel ground of exceptional clarity and saturation. Encircling the body is a continuous procession of stylized origami cranes, rendered in a lively palette of white, blue, red, pink, green, and black. The rhythmic repetition of the motif creates a dynamic and animated composition, with each crane carefully defined through controlled cloisonné wirework and balanced color application.
The design reflects a notable shift in Japanese cloisonné during the mid-century period, when artists embraced simplified compositions and modern themes while preserving the technical discipline of traditional enameling. The clean, uninterrupted ground enhances the visual impact of the motif, allowing the bold geometry and color of the cranes to take prominence.
The vase is signed “Sato,” confirming its production by the Sato cloisonné workshop, whose works are appreciated for their clarity of design, precision, and decorative appeal.
Combining traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly modern aesthetic, this piece stands as a sophisticated and visually engaging example of mid-century Japanese cloisonné—equally suited for collectors of Asian works of art or for integration into a refined contemporary interior.
