Fine and Rare Federal Bow Front Chest
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, ca. 1795-1810.
Figured mahogany, birdseye maple, white pine secondary wood
Over-all in fine condition, original brass, partially restored foot facing on rear foot.
Provenance: C. L. Prickett, October 4, 1995; Private Collection, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.
Literature: Two similar works are pictured in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, Vol. 1, page 245 and Vol. 6, page 1449.
The Figured mahogany top with banded inlay edge above four cockbeaded long drawers each veneered with two barber-pole traced birdeye maple oval panels above a shaped apron with inlaid banding is supported by tall swept French feet. The use of birdseye maple oval panels makes this a rare example.
