Description
An antique Korean Wood Chest from Jeon-Ju, North Jeolla Province made in 19th century of late Joseon Dynasty. Constructed in Korean Elm (Zelkova) and pine wood, this two-level chest is an authentic period piece typical of the chests made in Jeon-Ju area therefore known as Joen-Ju Jang. Catered for a wide range of use, this Jeon-Ju Jang is relatively small and was likely used for small household items such as books or small items of clothes. The Jang is characterized by a "hybrid" design with a bi-fold door on the upper level and a "Bandaji' like drop-front door on the lower level. There is a row of four small drawers on the very top. Befitted with ample and strong iron hardware like large hinges and two lateral rows of corner brackets, the Jang was made as a piece of sturdy furniture to last.
The Jeon-Ju Jang shows extensive surface patina from its long life, but it remains in intact original condition and presents itself with a historical ambience and dignity. It will be a delight for any collector of Korean Furniture.
For a nearly identical Bandaji in the collection of Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, see illustration 34 on page 53 of the book "Traditional Korean Furniture" by Edward Reynolds Wright and Man Sill Pal.
Another similar example can be found in the collection of Portland Art Museum 81.97.4A-D.
For a comparable Jeon-Ju Chest in the collection of National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul, see item 038065. -
