    France circa 1775.

Coromandel lacquer originated during the 17th century in China where layers of lacquer where built up over a fabric wooden base which was then carved and coloured typically for a screen. In the 18th century, lacquer was in such high demand that French cabinet makers dismantled Chinese coromandel pieces in order to re-use the lacquer panels on new French furniture.
