Description
18136: Large Bohemian green and clear glass vase or goblet
Bohemian, 20th Century
Height 50cm, diameter 30cm
Showcasing vibrant colour, meticulous cutting, and generous gilt decoration, this impressive Bohemian piece is a fine demonstration of the artistry achieved by glassmakers in the 20th century.
The tradition of Bohemian glass originates in what is now the Czech Republic, where glass was being produced to an exceptional standard from medieval times. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the region gained worldwide recognition for its advances in coloured glass, elaborate cutting, and refined surface decoration, frequently competing with the output of Venice and England. These established methods continued into the 20th century, with workshops preserving historic design influences while embracing contemporary techniques and maintaining a reputation for quality and luxury.
The form features a boldly flared trumpet bowl, ornamented with fourteen vertically arranged panels of green flashed glass worked in low relief. Below, a fourteen-sided faceted knop leads to a shaped stem and matching faceted foot. Clear glass panels are embellished with alternating gilt foliate motifs and fine vermiculated patterns, while bands of gold accent the rim, knop, and foot, unifying the design and enhancing its decorative presence.
What sets this vase apart is the interplay between the cool, translucent green overlay and the richness of the gilded decoration, highlighting the technical expertise required to achieve such precision and depth. A striking example of Bohemian decorative glass from the 20th century, it is an elegant and refined display piece that embodies centuries of craftsmanship and ornamental tradition.
