Description
18170: Antique Meissen Porcelain ‘Elements’ Ewer Emblematic of Air
German, Late 19th Century
Height 67cm, width 35cm, depth 21cm
Created in Germany during the late nineteenth century, this impressive Meissen porcelain ewer belongs to the celebrated ‘Four Elements’ series, inspired by the designs of Johann Joachim Kaendler, whose work defined some of the most ambitious achievements in European porcelain sculpture.
The composition is highly sculptural and richly animated, conceived as an allegorical representation of Air. The elegantly draped handle is surmounted by a winged putto playing a bagpipe, adding a lively, theatrical element. The spout is similarly elaborate, decorated with brightly coloured feather bands and a winged putto head, further enlivened by finely painted insects that demonstrate the exceptional level of surface detail.
The main body is moulded with birds in flight among billowing clouds, creating a strong sense of movement and lightness. This dynamic surface is enriched by allegorical figures, including Juno accompanied by her peacock and Zephyr in motion, reinforcing the symbolic theme of air.
The base continues the narrative with overlapping feathers and a further flying putto holding a dove, completing the composition with a sense of elevation and graceful continuity. The overall effect is one of movement, abundance, and sculptural richness across every surface.
Marked underneath with the underglaze blue crossed swords, along with incised model number ‘327’ and impressed number ‘51’, the piece confirms its Meissen origin and high-quality production.
Both technically accomplished and visually dramatic, this ewer exemplifies the enduring artistic legacy of Meissen’s element series, combining mythological storytelling, masterful modelling, and vibrant enamel decoration into a highly decorative work of art.
