Description
LOUIS XV CARVED AND LEATHER UPHOLSTERED FAUTEUIL
France, Provincial
Circa late 18th century, unmarked
37 7/8" H x 26 1/4" D x 27 1/2" W x 15" H to seat
A lovely sitting chair from the Louis XV period circa the last years of the eighteenth century, this fine fauteuil features a fluid carving throughout with open arms flanking vintage light brown leather upholstery over cabriole legs. The crest and seat rail loosely echo one another with a fluid rocaille carving surrounding a floral bas-relief, while the arms and legs are executed in the typical manner with an almost full cupid's bow formed from the handhold through the foot. The knees are relief carved with anthemion in the knees and the toes are fully developed with acanthus wrappings. The worn and beautifully patinated surface is silky to the touch and perfectly compliments the warmth of the leather, this likely chosen in the last fifty years for the chair and still perfectly comfortable and enjoyable.
A fine selection.
Condition: Vintage leather, not original, with stretching and wear throughout - nice overall patina, still perfectly serviceable. Extensive inactive woodworm holes throughout. Some wiggle in the frame from loosening of joints over the years, not concerning and still sturdy and enjoyable. Various chips and losses throughout, these mostly having since become a part of the overall patina. Ready to place.
