Description
This armchair is part of the celebrated “Diagonaalstoel” series designed by Willem Hendrik Gispen, first developed in 1927 and produced from 1929 onwards. The design is defined by its distinctive tubular steel frame, in which the front legs bend backward at a sharp angle to form a diagonal structural line—an innovation that gives the chair both its name and its visual identity. The present example includes integrated armrests, enhancing comfort while maintaining the light, open character typical of early cantilever seating. Models from this series were used in progressive modern interiors, including projects such as the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, one of the most iconic examples of Dutch modernist architecture.
Gispen was among the key figures introducing industrial production and functionalist principles into Dutch furniture design during the interwar period. Influenced by contemporaries such as Gerrit Rietveld, Marcel Breuer, and the broader Bauhaus movement, his work reflects a search for clarity, efficiency, and modern living. The Diagonaalstoel occupies an important place within this development, representing one of the earliest Dutch explorations of tubular steel furniture and the transition toward a rational, modern aesthetic. -
