Description
This refined pair of stools, produced in Brazil during the 1960s designed by Liceu de Artes, exemplifies the disciplined yet warm design language that defined Brazilian modernism at mid-century. Rooted in principles of architectural clarity, these stools translate structural logic into intimate, functional objects—where proportion, material, and joinery operate with quiet precision.
Each stool is constructed in solid Brazilian rosewood, its rectilinear frame articulated through clean lines and carefully resolved joinery. The composition recalls the architectural vocabulary of the period—posts, beams, and open spans—reflecting the influence of modernist building practices on Brazilian furniture design, where structure is not concealed but expressed. The rosewood has been carefully restored to a rich satin-matte finish, revealing deep, variegated grain and tonal movement that underscore the material’s natural density and refinement.
The handwoven cane seats introduce a deliberate sense of lightness, creating a nuanced counterpoint to the visual weight of the wood. This interplay between solid and void—mass and permeability—echoes the spatial strategies of Brazilian modern architecture, where openness and airflow were integral to both aesthetic and function. The cane work, executed with precision, reinforces the balance between craft tradition and modernist restraint.
Each stool is accompanied by a removable cushion upholstered in a deep olive mohair with a subtle brown undertone. The tone is intentionally muted and earthy—never bright or saturated—bringing a grounded warmth to the composition. The upholstery is executed in a dense, short-pile mohair with a refined, consistent nap, finished in a matte to soft satin-matte with a gentle luster. The cushion profile is slim and tailored, with soft, controlled edges and a single, centered button tuft—shallow and precise, with a self-covered button. The result is architectural and restrained, adding comfort without compromising the clarity of the original design.
Elegant yet utilitarian, these stools are highly versatile—functioning equally well as seating, side tables, or sculptural accents within a larger interior composition. Their restrained geometry, material integrity, and thoughtful balance between structure and softness position them as exemplary objects of Brazilian modern design, where craftsmanship, architecture, and everyday life converge.
A rare and considered pairing, further elevated by the addition of bespoke cushions that respect and extend the original design intent. -
