Vladimir Kagan Lounge Chair in Brazilian Rosewood & Velvet, Brazil

$ 11,280
  • Description
    A rare and highly sculptural Brazilian production attributed to Vladimir Kagan, executed in richly figured rosewood and upholstered in an exceptional period velvet. Designed in 1958, the chair embodies the distinctly sensual language that defined Kagan’s mid-century vocabulary — fluid architectural lines, aerodynamic movement, and an effortless balance between structure and comfort.

    The frame is crafted from solid Brazilian rosewood with dramatic grain movement and deep tonal variation throughout, finished in a refined satin-matte sheen that emphasizes the density and richness of the wood without excess gloss. Every structural gesture feels intentional: the sweeping triangular arms taper into elegantly splayed legs, while the open side profile creates a striking sense of lightness despite the chair’s substantial presence. The sculptural joinery and continuous flowing silhouette reflect the sophistication of late 1950s organic modernism at its most refined.

    The upholstery is executed in a richly textured velvet featuring an intricate abstract linear motif woven throughout, giving the fabric remarkable depth and dimensionality under changing light. Its coloration reads as a warm antique gold layered with subtle bronze undertones — luminous yet restrained — producing a surface that feels quietly opulent rather than decorative. The textile interacts beautifully with the dark rosewood frame, heightening the chair’s sculptural silhouette while adding warmth and visual complexity. Two restrained tufting details on the backrest further accentuate the tailored geometry of the upholstery without interrupting the purity of the form.

    What distinguishes this example is the dialogue between softness and precision. The exaggerated curvature of the upholstered body appears almost suspended within the angular rosewood structure, creating tension between organic volume and disciplined linework. From every angle, the chair reveals a different compositional rhythm — an approach deeply aligned with Kagan’s philosophy of furniture as functional sculpture.

    An exceptionally elegant and architecturally expressive lounge chair that stands as a strong example of Brazilian mid-century production influenced by the international modernist movement of the late 1950s.
