Description
Unusual George III Mahogany Windsor Armchair
England, circa 1770
Wonderfully bold and sculptural in form, the chair features beautifully turned spindles, a generous saddle seat, and rare hairy paw feet. Unusual in being executed in mahogany, the strong silhouette and ambitious scale give the chair a distinctive “country-meets-high-style” character, combining the familiarity and comfort of a traditional Windsor with the refinement and presence of sophisticated Georgian design. Chosen for its rich color, confident proportions, and exceptional visual strength.
The generous scale and deeply sculptural form allow the chair to function equally well as a practical seating form or as a standalone decorative object within an interior. Remarkably comfortable, the broad saddle seat and embracing form make it particularly inviting in daily use. Especially effective in contemporary settings, where its bold silhouette and rich patina create striking contrast against cleaner architectural surroundings.
Provenance: Estate of Robert K. Johnson, Aiken, South Carolina -
