Description
A Japanese woodblock print, entitled Kamakura 16 (also known as The Great Buddha of Kamakura) by British artist Charles William Bartlett (1860-1960), created in 1916 and published in 1918 by Shōzaburō Watanabe.
This rare original state print depicts the iconic giant Bronze Buddha statue in Kamakura, with a path leading to it. The scenery is set in the forested landscape and framed by trees. Visitors in kimonos leisurely stroll on the path, passing a purifying water pavilion. The bronze Buddha, a National Treasure of Japan, located in Kōtoku-in in Kamakura and was dated to 1252. With a height of 43.8 feet, the massive statue depicts a seated Amitābha in Meditation. The print is signed with red crayon on lower left margin: Charles W Bartlett. A 6mm Watanabe seal in block, together with a red copy right deal are on lower left. On the lower right corner in plate there are artist's monogram CWB as well as the title "Kamakura 1916" in a cartouche.
