Description
This rare ceramic vase, designed by Ewald Dahlskog and produced by Bobergs Fajansfabrik in Sweden during the 1930s, exemplifies the graceful synthesis of form and ornament characteristic of Scandinavian decorative arts in the interwar period. Dahlskog, known for his bold yet refined visual language, brought sculptural qualities to utilitarian objects, and this piece is a strong representation of that philosophy.
The vase features a sculptural body defined by an undulating, wave-like relief pattern that wraps rhythmically around its form. This flowing motif introduces a dynamic sense of movement while also enhancing the tactile experience of the object. The surface is finished in a soft, off-white glaze that complements the contours of the design. A subtle crackle effect within the glaze enriches the surface with a delicate network of lines, contributing to the piece’s aged beauty and highlighting its vintage character.
The organic curvature and restrained palette reflect Dahlskog’s modernist leanings, which often balanced decorative intent with an architectural sense of form. The vase’s profile is both substantial and refined, with a strong silhouette that makes it equally compelling as a standalone object or as part of a curated ceramic display.
The underside of the vase bears the impressed model number “D.288” and the hallmark of Bobergs Fajansfabrik, confirming its authenticity. Bobergs was a notable Swedish ceramics manufacturer during the early 20th century, known for producing artist-driven works of high craftsmanship. Their collaboration with Dahlskog resulted in several important decorative designs that bridged the traditions of Nordic craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics.
In good vintage condition, the vase displays a well-preserved surface with minor wear consistent with age. The patina enhances the glaze’s subtle crackle, while the form remains intact and free from structural flaws.
As a decorative object, this vase offers a rare combination of early 20th-century Scandinavian artistry and modernist expression. It stands as both a functional vessel and a sculptural artwork, showcasing Ewald Dahlskog’s contribution to Swedish design heritage.
