Large Antique Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket Hahakago in Chinese Taste

$ 7,600
  • Description
    This Japanese woven bamboo flower basket (Hanakago) of large size and impressive presence was constructed in a classic Chinese form derived from the shape of porcelain vase known as "HaiTangZun" (Begonia Vase). Known as karamono (objects in Chinese style), It features a baluster body, a concave neck opening to an everted wide rim, handles on the sides, and a slightly flaring foot. This particular form became popular during the reign of Qing emperor Yongzheng (1723–1735 AD).
    Although the basket was inspired by the Chinese form, its construction was entirely Japanese with a particular touch on the handles, two lateral ridge enforcements and a creative addition of the foot support. Impressive in size, the basket was made during late Meiji period (end of 19th-early 20th century) as an ikebana container that to occupy a central place for prominent display. The entire body was tightly woven in mat plaiting. Two lateral handles were made from semi-circular young bamboo stalk, twisted and knotted into a lace-like form and reinforced by thinly plated rattan tenacles. Positioned into the other two cordials, two stripes of plated longitude ridges were added, not only as decorative element, but also as reinforcement to maintain the shape of the body. The rendering of the foot support is particularly creative in this piece. An undulated rope form is attached on the lower body with extensions woven into the corners, conforming the contour and blended into the overall design. The mouth rim was finished in tight Kumi (parallel construction) and the base was completed with two crossing bamboo plates. There is a hand-forged bronze insert for holding the water for the lowers (Otoshimono), but we are not sure if it is original or later replacement, as the insert tend to be made of bamboo trunk traditionally.
    Although we don't know the author of this basket, it demonstrates a superb craftsmanship with masterful techniques at the disposal of the maker. The basket remains in excellent condition with the weaving remains tight. It was clearly used with care.
    A wonderful piece of Japanese bamboo art, impressive in its age, size and aesthetic appeal.
