A spectacular and monumental early 18th Century Austrian carved frame.

Originally made as an ecclesiastical surround for an altarpiece or devotional painting. Of extraordinary scale, the rectangular aperture is framed by deep pierced scrolling foliage and bold Baroque ornament, centred with decorative medallion roundels to the crest and apron. The text on the apron roundel reading:

Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe
Friede auf Erden
und den Menschen
ein Wohlgefallen

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men."

Retaining a wonderfully timeworn surface with traces of earlier finish and attractive wear throughout.

An exceptional statement piece—ideal as a dramatic mirror frame or to surround a large artwork within a grand interior. Circa 1720.
