Description
1900 $5 Liberty Head Rare Coin
CACG PR67DCAM
Certification: 9286.67/297490363
Type 2 With Motto
Mintage: 230 (120-150 extant, per John Dannreuther)
CACG POP: 2/0
The 1900 $5 is an important Condition Rarity in its assigned grade of PR67DCAM. To give a full picture, we are including PCGS (2/2) and NGC (4/3) populations. This issue is quite challenging to acquire in Deep Cameo. The era of dramatic high contrast proofs was nearing its end as the Mint switched to all-brilliant proofs and later matte and satin proof finishes.
This issue rarely appears at auction in PR67DCAM. We discovered only two auction events with pieces graded by NGC between 2019 and 2025—and none earlier.
The proof coins of 1900 present dramatic field to device contrast, and are among the most attractive proof specimens, reminding one of the spectacular proofs struck by the Mint during the 1890s. According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, many 1900 proof $5 pieces went unsold. John Dannreuther’s research (2018) estimates a survival of only 120-150 coins; he believes that much of the mintage was destroyed through melting before they left the Mint.
Opportunities to acquire a coin of this rarity and beauty are uncommon, making it a numismatic investment deserving of strong consideration.
