Description
This dresser is in the process of being restored. Contact us for details*
A striking expression of American Mid-Century Modern design, this exceptionally rare double dresser by Vladimir Kagan for Grosfeld House is a museum-worthy example of the designer’s groundbreaking approach to sculptural furniture. Designed circa 1955, this impressive case piece showcases the flowing organic forms and architectural balance that established Kagan as one of the most influential furniture designers of the twentieth century.
Crafted in beautifully cherrywood, the dresser embodies Kagan’s philosophy that furniture should feel fluid and dynamic rather than rigid and straight. The clean, uninterrupted drawer fronts create a refined minimalist façade, allowing the dramatic sculptural base to become the visual focal point. Inspired by movement and modern architecture, the intersecting splayed legs give the substantial case an almost weightless appearance while demonstrating the remarkable engineering and craftsmanship of Grosfeld House.
Behind its understated exterior are six generously sized drawers, providing abundant storage while maintaining perfectly balanced proportions. The seamless integrated drawer fronts emphasize the purity of the design, allowing the rich cherrywood grain and warm lacquered finish to take center stage.
This example retains its original Grosfeld House foil label, marked “Grosfeld House – New York • Chicago • Los Angeles,” further confirming its authenticity and collectible significance. Furniture from Vladimir Kagan’s early Grosfeld House period is becoming increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly large case pieces in original condition. Double dressers of this model are among the rarest forms from the collection and are seldom seen on the market.
Whether placed in a bedroom, living room, or sophisticated office, this exceptional dresser functions equally well as a luxury storage cabinet, credenza, or statement piece. Its timeless silhouette complements both contemporary interiors and important collections of American modern design.
At Hobbs Modern, we are continually drawn to furniture that transcends utility and becomes functional art. This rare Vladimir Kagan dresser represents the pinnacle of post-war American craftsmanship, combining sculptural innovation, premium materials, and enduring elegance into one extraordinary piece.
