Description
16963: French Chinoiserie-Style Cloisonné Enamel and Ormolu Jardinière
Chinese/French, c. 1880
Height 35cm, width 40cm, depth 32cm
This magnificent jardinière is an outstanding example of the late 19th-century European fascination with chinoiserie, uniting a vibrant Chinese cloisonné enamel vessel with an elaborate French ormolu mount of exceptional quality.
At its heart is a broad, rounded bowl of cloisonné enamel, richly decorated on a brilliant turquoise ground with flowering peony branches, lotus blossoms, stylised birds and delicate foliage. Each motif is meticulously defined by fine gilt cloison wires and set against an intricate geometric diaper ground, creating a surface of remarkable richness and depth. Encircling the vessel is an elaborate gilt-bronze framework: a finely pierced gallery to the rim, boldly modelled twin handles formed as winged mythical creatures with crisply chased plumage, and an equally elaborate pierced socle raised upon four scrolling feet, each headed by an expressive grotesque mask. The finely chased ormolu displays a wealth of acanthus foliage, scrollwork and classical ornament, lending the composition an impressive sculptural presence.
During the second half of the 19th century, Parisian bronziers frequently transformed imported Chinese cloisonné into luxurious decorative objects, mounting them in finely cast and chased gilt bronze for fashionable European interiors. Such works perfectly embodied the period's eclectic taste, celebrating both the technical brilliance of Chinese enamelling and the virtuosity of French bronze craftsmanship. Here, the striking contrast between the luminous turquoise enamel and the warm, richly gilded ormolu creates a composition of exceptional decorative impact.
Bold in scale, richly ornamented and beautifully balanced, this jardinière exemplifies the successful fusion of Eastern artistry and French decorative refinement, making it an exceptional statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
