A large and sculptural regency sofa in beautifully figured mahogany veneer and velvet. Europe, early 19th century.

Featuring an architectural sense of balance, this fantastic regency sofa combines generous proportions with a refined decorative language. Shows sweeping scroll arms with winged facades, a richly upholstered seat and a gently curved backrest. Gilt rosettes are set within the rolled terminals of the arms and large carved paw feet anchor the form to the ground. The result is a very distinctive piece that feels formal and inviting at the same time.

The regency period embraced influences drawn from the classical world, yet avoided excess. The architecture and decorative arts of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt were translated monumental forms into furniture of remarkable elegance.
