Offered for sale is a circa 1925 bronze and bone sculpture by the Professor Otto Peortzel titled "The Minstrel & The Maiden," or sometimes known as "Romeo and Juliet."
The piece depicts a maiden in a long dress riding a horse, being assisted by a suitor in medieval clothing. It is a chryselephantine sculpture, featuring cold-painted bronze for the figures and the horse, and carved bone for the faces and arms. The original chryselephantine process originated in the ancient Mediterranean (6th-5th century BC. The technique resurged during the Art Deco era (1920s–1930s), with patinated bronze to create lavish, highly sought-after statuettes.
