Tall Antique Chinese Langyao Red Ceramic Vase Qing Qianlong Mark

$ 8,000
  • Description
    A tall Chinese vase with Sang-de-Boeuf (oxblood) glaze in a Shuantou (Garlic Head) form circa 18th century from Qing Dynasty. The red glaze is known as Langyao Red in Chinese. It is a copper-based glaze developed in Ming dynasty before the technique nearly disappeared. It was later revived during Qing dynasty by the imperial court and reached the peak of its quality during 17th-18th century in the reign of Kangxi and Qianlong Emperor.
    This vase on offer is elegantly potted in a relatively scarce form known as garlic head named after the shape of the specific mouth opening. The eye-pleasing form is perfectly proportioned. The red glaze is of a spectacular shade of red with a pink hue which may be called "Peach Blossom Red" in Chinese by collectors. The red color fades to a white toward the garlic head in a filament mottled effect. A wonderful feather-like pattern along the vertical axis is also visually prominent in the lower body toward the base. The well-controlled glaze also features a fine overall crackle. The glaze stopped evenly at the foot ring which was potter-cut and unglazed. The bottom of the base was glazed white with a subtle celadon hue. The vase was marked with an underglaze blue archaic seal mark "Great Qing Qianlong Year Made". A paper sticker remained showing a lot number from Yokohama International Auction in Japan, a reputable house that specializes in Chinese antiques and ceramics. Examined the vase, we believe that it is most likely of the Qianlong period.
    Provenance: Estate collection, US.
