Northern Italian Louis XVI Burl Walnut Marquetry Commode, Circa 1770

  • Description
Late 18th Century Northern Italian Louis XVI Walnut and Burl Walnut Marquetry Commode
A refined late eighteenth-century Northern Italian commode crafted in richly figured walnut and walnut burl veneers with elegant geometric marquetry throughout. The molded top is centered by an octagonal reserve framed by crossbanding and delicate string inlay above four serpentine drawers retaining their original iron escutcheons and working locks. The architectural case is flanked by paneled sides and raised on a molded plinth base. Beautifully proportioned and retaining exceptional color and patina, the commode exemplifies the sophisticated Neoclassical cabinetmaking produced in Northern Italy during the Louis XVI period, circa 1775–1795.
The quality of the veneers, geometric marquetry, and drawer construction suggests it was made at the hands of a sophisticated urban cabinet maker in an accomplished Northern Italian workshop, likely in Venice, Verona, Milan, or the surrounding Lombardy/Veneto region.
