Brazilian Modern Chaise Lounge in Caviúna Wood & Olive Mohair, Pierre Weckx

Designed and executed in Brazil during the 1950s by Pierre Weckx, this rare chaise lounge exemplifies the organic modern movement that shaped Latin American design in the postwar period. Characterized by fluid lines, ergonomic intent, and expressive materiality, this movement sought to humanize modern interiors through form inspired by the body and nature.

The chaise is constructed entirely in caviúna wood, combined with hand-woven rope and a single, loose cushion secured directly to the frame. Its elongated, aerodynamic profile creates a strong sense of motion and visual levity, while the gently inclined seat and back emphasize relaxation and repose. The structural logic—where wood, rope, and upholstery work in concert—reflects the experimental spirit of Brazilian design studios in the 1950s.

Though Pierre Weckx remains relatively undocumented, his work appeared in prominent period publications, including House & Garden Brazil, situating him within the broader cultural exchange fostered by European émigré designers arriving in Brazil during that decade. These designers played a critical role in expanding Brazilian modernism beyond strict rationalism toward more organic and expressive forms.

The wood has been expertly refinished by one of Brazil’s leading restorers, revealing the depth and warmth of the caviúna grain. The rope and cushion are new, executed with sensitivity to the original construction and intent. Surviving examples of Weckx’s furniture are notably scarce, making this chaise an exceptional and highly collectible work—both sculptural and historically significant.
