Brazilian Modern Pair of Armchairs in Caviúna Wood & Performance Boucle, Brazil

  • Description
A sculptural pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs crafted in richly figured Caviúna hardwood, these exceptional 1960s examples embody the architectural spirit that defined Brazil's most celebrated design period. Produced during the era that accompanied the construction of Brasília, the chairs reflect the movement's emphasis on honest materials, structural clarity, and generous proportions designed for everyday comfort.

Originally commissioned for and used by Infraero, Brazil's federal airport authority, the chairs carry a distinguished institutional provenance tied to one of the country's most ambitious periods of modern development. Their robust construction, refined joinery, and understated elegance are characteristic of the furniture specified for important civic interiors of the time.

The solid Caviúna frames display bold architectural lines softened by elegantly curved arm supports, creating a striking balance between strength and fluidity. The wood has been professionally refinished to reveal the dramatic grain patterns for which Caviúna is celebrated, ranging from warm chestnut and honeyed caramel to rich espresso tones with expressive dark veining. A beautifully matured patina and gentle signs of age remain throughout the frames, preserving the authenticity and history of the pieces while enhancing their visual depth and character.

The chairs have been newly upholstered in a premium textured performance fabric in a warm natural beige. Its richly woven bouclé-like texture introduces subtle visual movement while remaining refined and timeless. Soft to the touch yet highly durable, the upholstery offers excellent resilience for everyday use. The generously padded seat and back cushions provide exceptional comfort, while the adjustable backrests allow the reclining angle to be customized, creating an unusually ergonomic seating experience for a design of this period.

Each chair retains its original manufacturing seal on the reverse, an important detail that further reinforces its provenance and originality.

Beyond their historical significance, these armchairs are remarkably versatile. Their architectural silhouette allows them to transition effortlessly between interiors—as elegant living room armchairs, sophisticated head chairs for a dining table, refined executive desk chairs, or sculptural accent pieces in an entryway, bedroom, library, or office. As illustrated in the accompanying lifestyle imagery, their understated presence complements both residential and hospitality settings with equal ease.

Architectural yet inviting, these armchairs exemplify the timeless sophistication of Brazilian Modernism—combining sculptural form, exceptional craftsmanship, rich institutional provenance, and enduring comfort into a pair that feels as relevant today as when it was first produced more than six decades ago.
