Napoleon III Demi-Lune In-laid Marquetry Commode & Breccia Medicea Marble top

$ 8,800
  • Description
    France, Circa 1865–1880
    A masterful expression of the Napoleon III revival of Louis XVI design, this exceptional French demi-lune commode embodies the extraordinary craftsmanship for which the finest Parisian ébénistes of the period were celebrated. Gracefully proportioned and richly ornamented, every surface has been thoughtfully composed, resulting in a cabinet that is both architecturally elegant and artistically refined.
    The façade is veneered in beautifully figured kingwood and rosewood arranged in striking geometric patterns, enriched with exquisitely executed floral and musical trophy marquetry. The central drawers display an intricate composition of crossed instruments, ribbonwork, and botanical motifs, while each curved side cabinet door features finely shaded floral marquetry framed by delicate stringing and contrasting inlaid borders. The precision of the inlay work reflects the highest standards of nineteenth-century French cabinetmaking.
    The original gilt bronze ormolu mounts remain throughout, retaining crisp hand-chased detail. Laurel wreath ring pulls, richly modeled floral corner mounts, acanthus sabots, and the elegant pierced apron mount provide brilliant contrast against the warm, lustrous veneers while emphasizing the cabinet's graceful architectural form.
    Crowning the commode is its original Breccia Medicea marble top, distinguished by a dramatic palette of soft grays, warm creams, ochres, and russet veining. The richly brecciated stone, prized by European aristocracy for centuries, provides a magnificent natural complement to the refined marquetry below and further elevates the cabinet's presence.
    Behind the pair of curved side doors are practical shelved compartments, while the central bank of drawers offers generous storage, making this commode as functional today as it is beautiful. The original hand-cut dovetailed drawer construction and finely executed interior joinery further attest to the quality of its manufacture.
    This remarkable commode has undergone a meticulous professional restoration that honors its originality while allowing its exceptional craftsmanship to be fully appreciated. The veneers have been carefully conserved, the original ormolu professionally cleaned to reveal its rich gilded finish without sacrificing its character, and the entire cabinet has been completed with a traditional hand-applied French polish.
