Description
An Italian late Neoclassical style giltwood mirror with unusual laurel encirclement
Florence. Second Quarter Of The Nineteenth Century.
Measurements
Height: 59 1/2" (151.1 cm); Width: 45 1/2" (108 cm).
Research:
Of giltwood. The rectangular mirror plate within a carved garland of various fruits and nuts. The crest surmounted by an upswept acanthus leaf strung with beaded center, the sides flanked by rocaille acanthine carving and the lower part centered by conforming downswept acanthus leaf decoration, the whole encircled by a carved laurel wreath.
Above all other centers of the eighteenth and nineteenth century decorative arts in Europe, perhaps none surpassed Italy in terms of inventiveness and experimentation in design. The present mirror combines allusions to both the vigorously carved acanthine frames of the baroque period with symmetry and swagged motifs of Neoclassicism.
