Pair of Victorian-era folding screens, “Troubadour” style, England, circa 1850

Price Upon Request
  • Description
A pair of Victorian-era, three-panel folding screens in the « Troubadour » style. The room dividers are double-sided.
The solid mahogany frames feature pointed-arch (ogival) cutouts and are fitted with small casters and brass hinges. They are very carefully made.
The interior panels are lacquered blue and fully decorated on both sides with cut-out, applied chromolithographic figures. These figures range from famous personalities—English, Italian, and French—to a wide variety of colonial or tribal subjects.

Chromolithography is a printing process that enables the reproduction of color images using limestone blocks or metal plates. Invented in 1837 by Godefroy Engelmann, the technique enjoyed great success from the 19th century through the 1950s, used to illustrate books, posters, and postcards.
