French 18th Century Louis XVI Carved Trumeau Mirror with Warrior Attributes

Made in France in the eighteenth century, this small Louis XVI trumeau mirror is carved in wood and decorated with warrior attributes, and was originally painted. Trophies of arms and warrior attributes were a recurring motif in neoclassical decoration, and their use here places the mirror firmly within the Louis XVI vocabulary. The carved wood frame retains evidence of its original painted finish, and the modest scale makes the piece versatile for placement above a small console, chest, or fireplace, or on a narrow wall. The trumeau form, taller than it is wide, draws the eye upward and suits a position between windows or over a low piece of furniture. The carved military motifs give the mirror a distinct decorative character within the restrained neoclassical style. It returns light and adds an eighteenth-century French accent to a hall, reception room, or bedroom.
