Emile Godchaux was a French academic painter whose subjects consisted of maritime seascapes, floral still lifes, and rural landscapes. He traveled Europe collecting subjects to depict, including the lagoons of Venice and the mountains of the Pyrenees. Born in Bordeaux, France in 1860, his style is similar to that of the Barbizon school, which preferred realism over romanticism, and reminiscent of painters such as Théodore Rousseau and John Constable.
