This large carved neoclassical plaque, depicting Venus binding the wings of Cupid, is an example of Northern European neoclassical sculpture of the first half the nineteenth century, and was almost certainly created by Ignatius Johann Stracké (1789–1864), founder of the Stracké dynasty of artists. The subject illustrated is Venus binding Cupid’s wings, a punishment that is rarely represented in art in any medium. “Although Cupid was one of the lesser figures in Greek and Roman mythology, as the god of love he was widely represented in Hellenistic art and in the Renaissance and later.”
