French 19th Century Turquoise and Green Glaze Confit Pot

Finished in a turquoise and green glaze, this French confit pot was made around 1840 and represents a rarer variant of the type. Confit pots were utilitarian kitchen jars used to store meat preserved in its own fat, with thick earthenware bodies typical of nineteenth-century French provincial pottery. The turquoise and green glaze covers the upper body and runs toward the unglazed lower section, the pooled glaze giving the surface depth and movement. The less common colouring distinguishes this example from the standard green pots, making it more sought after among collectors of French country pottery. The rounded form and wide mouth reflect the vessel's original storage purpose. Now valued as a decorative object, it suits display on a kitchen shelf or table, use as a holder for utensils or cut stems, or grouping with related pieces for a fuller display.
