This 19th-century French chair belongs to the tradition of vernacular furniture, where direct construction and available materials took precedence over formal decoration. Its unusually low seat is formed from broad wooden boards and supported by a straightforward framed base with stretchers, while the tall open back consists of two uprights joined by simple horizontal rails.

The irregular surface, exposed fastenings, softened edges and extensive traces of use give the chair a particularly expressive character. Of particular interest is the metal plate reinforcing the junction between one front leg and the lower stretcher, an old utilitarian repair that has been retained as part of the chair's history.
