Description
This pair of Brazilian modern armchairs from the 1950s balances architectural clarity with exceptional comfort. The open frames are crafted from solid imbuia, a Brazilian hardwood prized for its rich grain and tonal depth. Decades of natural aging have given the wood a beautifully developed patina, ranging from warm amber and tobacco brown to deeper reddish undertones.
The angular construction—with splayed legs, broad horizontal armrests, and a generously proportioned upholstered back—reflects the direct, structural language characteristic of Brazilian design during the period. Its robust geometry shares affinities with certain early works by José Zanine Caldas, particularly in the expressive use of native wood and the visible relationship between frame and upholstery.
The chairs are upholstered in deep petrol-blue mohair, a sophisticated tone that moves between midnight blue, peacock, and muted teal as the light changes. Its subtle luster creates a striking yet harmonious contrast with the warmth of the aged imbuia, lending the pair both richness and visual depth.
Generous seat cushions and gently angled backrests provide excellent lumbar support and an exceptionally comfortable sitting position. Sculptural without appearing rigid, these Brazilian mid-century modern armchairs transition easily between formal and informal interiors—from a refined living room or library to a relaxed bedroom or private study. -
