Description
An impressive French mantel clock executed in the expressive Romantic style of the mid-19th century. The composition is surmounted by a dynamic bronze figure of a mounted hussar charging up a rugged rocky slope. Depicted on a rearing horse with drawn sabre, the rider conveys exceptional energy and dramatic intensity. The distinctive Hungarian shako and military attire reflect the widespread fascination within European Romanticism with the figure of the Hungarian hussar, regarded as one of the most enduring symbols of heroism and martial valour during the mid-19th century. Such allegorical compositions became a hallmark of French decorative arts, embodying the periods fascination with historical narratives and military subjects. Despite its frontal presentation, the sculptural group is conceived asymmetrically, creating a compelling impression of vigorous movement. The clock case is richly ornamented with relief decoration inspired by the French Renaissance Revival, a characteristic feature of French artistic bronze production of the mid-19th century. The contrast between the fire-gilt bronze case and the dark patinated horse enhances the sculptural modelling, while the refined chasing and meticulous surface finishing demonstrate a high level of artistic conception and bronze-casting craftsmanship. The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals is harmoniously integrated into the architectural structure of the base, successfully combining sculptural expression with practical function. The clock is a distinguished example of French artistic bronze of the mid-19th century, uniting exceptional craftsmanship with a powerful historical and decorative programme. Dimensions: Height: 44 cm. Width: 30.5 cm. Depth: 11 cm. Condition: Good condition. The movement has undergone a complete professional overhaul.
