Description
Niels Otto Møller founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Aarhus in 1944, initially producing custom-made dining and living room furniture in a small workshop. In the early 1950s, the company shifted toward serial chair production, with Møller designing his own collection and maintaining a strong connection between design and cabinetmaking. The “Model 80”, introduced in 1968, belongs to this period of work and is a characteristic example of the precise craftsmanship for which Møller’s dining chairs became known.
The set of six is constructed from wooden frames and cognac faux leather, bringing the two materials together in a particularly warm composition. Each chair stands on four finely sculpted, slender legs, with the rear legs continuing upward to support the backrest and giving the frame an uninterrupted vertical line. The seat is broad and gently curved, an open section separates the seat from the backrest, giving the chairs a lighter profile and allowing the wood to remain visible. The backrest has subtly curved edges that soften the rectangular shape. Cognac leather covers both seat and back, and its rich tone that complements the reddish-brown wood, allowing the construction to read as a unified whole. Arranged as a set, the slim legs, open backs and warm tone create a strong visual rhythm around a dining table.
J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik was well-known for its work ethic. It is said that when Niels Otto Møller designed a chair, he would find the materials and then design the furniture which often took him five years to complete. This work ethic - exemplified by this “Model 80” set - is why the Møller collection is relatively small for a company that’s been around for more than 70 years, and that’s what makes Møller so special.
