Description
A beautiful set of six model 66 dining chairs designed by Alvar Aalto and manufactured in Finland during the 1940s–1950s.
Model 66 is distinguished by its tall, gently curved backrest, circular seat and Aalto’s characteristic bent birch legs. The broad backrest offers comfortable support, while the open lower section gives the chair a lighter and more elegant appearance. Its clean construction and warm natural birch make it a versatile design suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The chairs are in beautiful vintage condition. Their surfaces have been carefully refinished while preserving the rich patina, variations in tone and traces of use accumulated over many decades. These individual differences give each chair its own character while maintaining a harmonious appearance as a set.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a Finnish architect and designer whose furniture played an important role in the development of modern Scandinavian design. Working closely with the furniture manufacturer Otto Korhonen, Aalto experimented with bending and laminating Finnish birch to create strong, lightweight furniture without relying on tubular steel. In 1935, Aalto co-founded Artek with Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl to produce and distribute their furniture and promote modern design. His bentwood chairs, stools and armchairs remain among the most widely recognized Finnish furniture designs of the twentieth century. -
