Description
Elegant Italian mid century sideboard or bar cabinet dating from the mid-20th century, circa 1940s–50s, characterized by a slender architectural structure and a refined combination of parchment, fine wood veneers and figurative marquetry. The decorative panels are attributed to the Anzani tradition, one of the notable expressions of Lombard cabinetmaking during this period.
The rectangular structure, slightly tapered towards the base, is raised on four tall, slender legs that give the cabinet a light and elegant appearance. The front is divided into three generous doors, each fitted with a key lock, covered in pale parchment and framed by a finely finished wooden border with discreet metal details.
The main decorative feature is the three figurative marquetry panels, each conceived as an individual composition while forming a coherent decorative scheme across the front. Flowers, leaves and botanical elements are accompanied by butterflies in flight. Different wood species are carefully combined to create natural variations in colour and tone, defining the petals, foliage and smaller details of the compositions.
The use of parchment as a decorative surface is particularly important to the character of the piece. Its subtly irregular texture and warm ivory colour provide a restrained background for the marquetry, allowing the intricate decoration to stand out without making the overall composition visually heavy. The contrast between the richly decorated doors and the clean geometry of the cabinet is one of its most successful features.
The interior reveals a configuration designed specifically for use as a bar and storage cabinet. The central compartment features glass shelves, additional shelves and small drawers, together with a working interior light. The two lateral compartments provide further generous storage, suitable for bottles, glassware and serving accessories.
There is an interesting contrast between the cabinet when closed and when opened. Closed, it presents a compact and highly decorative architectural form; opened, it reveals a carefully organized and functional interior. This combination of concealed functionality and refined exterior design is characteristic of the more sophisticated Italian bar cabinets of the period.
The attribution of the decorative panels to the Anzani tradition adds further interest to the piece. The Anzani family was associated with the long-established tradition of Lombard cabinetmaking, particularly in the Brianza area, where highly skilled marquetry and luxury furniture production flourished during the first half of the 20th century. Parchment surfaces and figurative marquetry were among the refined techniques employed in high-quality furniture of the period.
This cabinet combines refined materials, elaborate figurative marquetry and a carefully considered interior in a composition that remains elegant rather than overly ornate. The combination of parchment and hand-worked decorative panels makes it a relatively uncommon type of Italian furniture, equally suited to a period interior or to a contemporary setting where its decorative character can be fully appreciated.
