Description
Few Italian designs capture the radical comfort and sensuality of the 1970s quite like the Soriana. Designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, the Soriana rejected the conventional idea that upholstered furniture required a rigid internal structure. Instead, its generous cushioning is gathered, compressed, and held in place by an exposed metal framework, creating the wonderfully relaxed, almost sculptural form that made the design an icon of Italian modernism.
This exceptional vintage Cassina Soriana loveseat sofa and matching ottoman retains its vintage frames and Cassina identification tags and has been professionally reupholstered in new burgundy leather. The deep wine-colored leather is particularly striking against the polished metal framework, emphasizing the voluptuous curves and dramatic proportions of the design.
The upholstery is deeply tufted across the seat and back, creating the characteristic pillowy landscape for which the Soriana is celebrated. Rather than concealing its construction, the design makes the structure part of the visual experience. Polished metal bands wrap around and contain the upholstered forms, gathering the leather at the sides and rear and producing the distinctive folds that give the Soriana its unmistakable appearance.
Viewed from behind, the loveseat is every bit as compelling as it is from the front. The exposed metal framework traces the upholstered body and reveals how cleverly the cushions are contained. This makes the Soriana particularly well suited to an open-plan interior where it can be appreciated from every angle rather than simply placed against a wall.
Included is the matching vintage Cassina Soriana ottoman, newly upholstered at the same time in the same burgundy leather. Together, the loveseat and ottoman create an exceptionally comfortable and visually substantial seating arrangement while maintaining the low profile associated with the original design.
Please note: In some of our photographs, the ottoman may appear slightly lighter or a different shade than the loveseat. This is purely the result of lighting and camera flash reflecting differently from the leather. The loveseat and ottoman are upholstered in the same matching burgundy leather.
Designed by Italian architects and designers Afra & Tobia Scarpa, the Soriana was introduced by Cassina around 1969 and quickly became one of the defining upholstered furniture designs of the era. Its combination of technical innovation, informal comfort, and sculptural presence helped earn the design the Compasso d’Oro in 1970, Italy’s prestigious award for industrial design.
This example offers an especially desirable combination: authentic vintage Cassina production with Cassina tags, paired with newly completed leather upholstery. It preserves the character and collectibility of a vintage Soriana while giving the piece a fresh, luxurious surface ready for contemporary use.
Bold yet remarkably inviting, this vintage Afra & Tobia Scarpa Soriana loveseat and ottoman for Cassina is more than seating—it is a landmark of postwar Italian design and an extraordinary sculptural presence for a sophisticated interior.
