Description
This ad is for a pair of Argyle chairs designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Atelier International
Designed 1897
This chair was exhibited at the Eighth Secession Exhibition in Vienna, Austria in 1900, where Mackintosh with his individual style contributed to the development of the Wiener Werkstätte, a famous Viennese design firm, founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann, Fritz Wärndorfer and Koloman Moser. Characteristic of the Argyle chair is the high backrest, which is also found in the design of other seats, such as the Hill house chair.
Mackintosh was one of the forerunners of the Arts and Crafts Movement, incorporating the craftsmanship into his designs. He began to get deeply involved furniture making in 1894. His designs are influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, as well as, Art Nouveau.
He used Scottish baronial style along with Japanese influence and Celtic motifs in his designs.
Reupholstery recommended.
