Description
Antique Quaker Sampler, 1809, Mary Grigg, Banwell. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Discontinuous half-medallion border. Colours green, dark brown, gold, silver, black, blue and pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case. Signed and dated 'Anno 1809 Mary Grigg Banwell'. Banwell lies only a few miles from Sidcot, an important Somerset Quaker centre and school, which was re-established as a co-educational Friends school in 1808. Members of the Grigg family of Banwell are recorded in Quaker records. Research is ongoing to establish whether Mary Grigg herself attended Sidcot. Various scattered motifs, including stylised flowering plants, potted plants, birds, squirrels, a swan and trees. Numerous octagonal and polygonal medallions enclose a few of the motifs. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to acid free card. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape. (Dimensions including frame are 42.5cm (16.7ins) wide. 44.7cm (17.6ins) high.). Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
