Description
This rare coffee table, produced by Bodafors in Sweden, is a refined example of Swedish modern design, combining clarity of form with skilled craftsmanship. While the designer remains unknown, the piece reflects the aesthetic and construction values associated with Bodafors—a prominent Swedish furniture manufacturer recognized for its commitment to quality and design integrity throughout the mid-20th century.
The table is composed of a round, clear glass top that rests on a sculptural base made from solid birch. The birch exhibits warm honey-brown hues and a pronounced grain pattern that animates the surface without overpowering the minimalist design. The wood is finely finished, with a subtle sheen that highlights the material’s natural texture and tonal variation.
The base design is both functional and sculptural, consisting of angled and gently curved elements that converge at a central point. This configuration provides stability while creating an open, architectural form. The geometry of the base adds visual interest and allows light to pass through and reflect off the glass top, emphasizing the interplay between transparency and structure.
The juxtaposition of the transparent glass and richly grained wood achieves a balance between modernist clarity and organic warmth. The restrained design language avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the quality of the materials and the precision of the joinery to define the piece.
The condition of the table is excellent. The birch base remains structurally sound and aesthetically clean, with the original finish preserved. The glass top is free from noticeable scratches, chips, or clouding, maintaining its clarity and contributing to the table’s fresh appearance.
Bodafors, also known as AB Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors, played a key role in the development of Swedish modernism, often working with designers who emphasized craftsmanship and clean lines. This coffee table is consistent with those values and represents a thoughtful blend of function, form, and material expression.
