Ansel Adams

Ansel Easton Adams (1902–1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist famous for his black-and-white images of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park. Born in San Francisco, Adams initially trained as a pianist before discovering photography during a family trip to Yosemite in 1916. His early work was influenced by pictorialism, but he later adopted a direct style emphasizing sharp focus and a full tonal range.
In 1932, Adams co-founded Group f/64, promoting pure photography with clear focus and detailed tonal gradation. He developed the Zone System, a technique for precise exposure and development in prints. His iconic images, including Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico and Clearing Winter Storm, helped establish photography as fine art and supported environmental conservation. His legacy continues to inspire photographers and environmentalists.
