Mountain Modern

Situated alongside a ski trail at Snowmass Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, this family compound took inspiration from mountain buildings in Europe, such as ski chalets, lodges and farmhouses. The design and details of the interior along with the finishes and fixtures are clean and current, but utilize local and rustic materials such as stone brought in from the neighboring state of Montana and antique beams and timbers repurposed from 19th century buildings. Locally harvested Larch and Alder woods were used for the clean lines of the interior architecture and custom cabinetry. Of particular note are the features custom designed by Alan Tanksley, such as the iron banister spindles, which were hand forged at a local foundry, and the regulation size billiards table with raised spectator bench. Alan comments on the project: “My pride lies in the details we brought to all areas of the interior and many of those outside the house. I had the opportunity to craft a house full of rich and subtle materials, reserved yet modern cabinetry and millwork and furnishings, lighting and fixtures that perfectly reflect the setting and fulfilled the clients desires for this very special destination, one that will bring the family and their guests great pleasure for years to come.”
