Lincoln Park Residence, Chicago, IL

Photography by Alan Shortall

The soigné vibe of this apartment is easily explained by the owner being a French businesswoman, who desired a pied-à-terre in Chicago. She then called Haley, whose work she was familiar with.

Haley made a minimum of architectural changes, adding a partial height wall in the kitchen that houses a banquette and window seat in the living area. With his subtle background in place, Haley focused on showstopping details.

The iconic Maison de Verre in Paris – a 1932 house with an industrial grid facade – was the inspiration for the glass-topped steel subway grate that serves as an entry console. In the master bedroom the headboard is upholstered in a riff on a settee formally in Pauline de Rothschild's Parisian drawing room. The den is painted onyx-black, a wry reference to a French fumoir or smoking room.

All of this sophistication doesn't mean that there's no place for a galvanized steel feeding trough in the living area for firewood storage.
