The LA Art Show is the region’s preeminent art fair and one of the largest international art fairs in the United States. After a record-breaking turnout in 2016, this year is projected to draw 70,000 attendees when it returns for its 22nd edition. Since the show’s founding in 1995 to address the cultural interests of Angelenos, it has become one of the art world’s largest and longest running events. This year, the fair’s board of directors has placed a new focus on postwar modern and contemporary artwork. The LA Art Show brings together the largest grouping of Chinese, Korean and Japanese dealers outside of Asia, exemplifying how the city of Los Angeles is spearheading the global art scene. This year’s show will feature the most international list of exhibitors to date, with more than 100 leading galleries from 18 countries. Those who attend the Opening Night Preview and Premiere Party on Wednesday, January 11, benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, will be the first to preview the works exhibited by top galleries around the world while enjoying culinary creations and specialty beverages from the city’s finest restaurants. A one day pass is $30, and four day pass is $60, but you can receive a $5 discount if you order in advance of the show.

photo l.a. began 26 years ago in 1991 as a casual meet-up for artists, galleries and collectors but has since transformed into a seminal global showcase of photographic art ranging from 19th-century masterpieces to cutting-edge works by contemporary talents. Some of the highlights from this year’s offerings include a curated installation by Monroe Gallery of Photography of LIFE magazine photographer Grey Villet’s intimate portraits of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple in 1960s segregated Virginia, as well as a contemporary installation of work by Penelope Umbrico combining photographic prints with other elements such as repurposed plexiglass, plastic lenses from deconstructed televisions, house paint, and cardboard boxes. The Opening Benefit Gala will honor the pioneering career of Weston Naef, author of numerous books on the history and art of photography, and the founding curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Lucie Foundation and John Wayne Cancer Foundation.

The aptly named FOG Design+Art fair returns this week for its fourth edition. The five-day celebration of the most significant creators and contributors in the worlds of visual art and design has quickly become a must-see event for collectors across the world, despite its relative newcomer status. This year’s edition will be created from flowers, and feature artisans who specialize in floral-themed designs. The Preview Gala Wednesday evening will continue to benefit the exhibitions and educational programs at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which serve more than 60,000 students, teachers, and families annually. Preview Gala ticket packages start from $175.
