Allan Adler
American, 1916 - 2002
Allan Adler (1916–2002) was an American silversmith renowned for his minimalist, Modernist-inspired designs in sterling silver. Trained by his father-in-law, seventh-generation silversmith Porter Blanchard, Adler opened his own workshop in Los Angeles in 1940. His clean lines and geometric forms attracted a celebrity clientele, earning him the nickname “silversmith to the stars.” Notable commissions included crowns for Miss Universe and Miss USA, mini-Oscars for the Academy Awards, and a silver coffee urn for John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign . Adler’s work was honored with a Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in 1959 and a Living Treasure of California award in 1985. His legacy continues through his daughter and grandson, who maintain the Adler tradition of handcrafted silverwork.
