Dean Cornwell
American, 1892 - 1960
Dean Cornwell (1892-1960) was an American illustrator and muralist known for his dynamic and dramatic style. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Cornwell worked for many of the leading magazines of his day, including Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, and Redbook, and was also commissioned to create advertising illustrations for major companies such as Coca-Cola and General Electric. He was particularly known for his illustrations of adventure and action scenes, such as historical battles, Westerns, and seafaring adventures. In addition to his magazine work, Cornwell was also an accomplished muralist, completing major commissions for public buildings such as the Los Angeles Public Library and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Society of Illustrators, and his works continue to be highly regarded today as exemplars of the Golden Age of Illustration.
