Hans Hansen
Danish, 1884 - 1940
Hans Hansen (1884-1940) was a Danish silversmith and designer, best known for his work in the Art Deco and functionalist styles. He was born in Kolding, Denmark, and trained as a silversmith in the workshops of Georg Jensen, another prominent Danish designer.
Hansen established his own workshop in 1906 and quickly gained a reputation for his innovative designs and high-quality craftsmanship. He was known for his use of simple, geometric forms and his attention to detail, which reflected the influence of the functionalist movement that was popular in Denmark at the time.
Hansen's work was highly sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs, and he won numerous awards for his designs, including a gold medal at the 1925 World Exposition in Paris. He was also a mentor to several other prominent Danish designers, including Arne Jacobsen and Henning Koppel.
Today, Hansen's work is highly prized by collectors of modernist and Art Deco design, and his designs are still produced by his eponymous company, Hans Hansen Silversmithy, which was founded by his son in 1953. His legacy continues to influence Danish design to this day.
