Henry Bermudez
Venezuelan
Henry Bermudez is a Venezuelan-born contemporary artist based in Philadelphia, celebrated for his vibrant mixed-media works that intertwine Afro-Caribbean, pre-Hispanic, and Judeo-Christian symbolism. Born in 1951 in Maracaibo, Venezuela, Bermudez’s upbringing in the Afro-Caribbean village of Borbures deeply influenced his artistic vision, drawing from local myths and religious syncretism. He trained at the National School of Art in Caracas and later honed his skills at "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City. After relocating to the United States in 2003 seeking political asylum, he became an active figure in the Philadelphia art scene, co-directing HouseGallery1816 and teaching at local institutions. Bermudez’s work has been exhibited internationally, and he has been honored with awards such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. His pieces are part of prominent collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
